City pipes in more proactive replacements

More than 40 000m of water and sewer pipes have already been replaced from July to September, in the first three months of the new 2024/2025 financial year. The City’s annual pipe replacement programme is a proactive measure, crucial to ensuring that residents continue to have access to reliable water and sanitation services.

During September, the Water and Sanitation Directorate implemented the planned replacement of:

• 5 359m of water pipes in Bellville, Bloubergstrand, Wellway Park, Loevenstein, Kuils River, Retreat, Glencairn and Hout Bay
• 8 943m of sewer pipes in Southfield, Happy Valley, Blackheath, Belhar, Somerset West, Strand, Eerste River, Kleingeluk, Blaauwberg, Gugulethu and Parow.

In this financial year, the City is investing just over R323 million to replace aged water and sanitation infrastructure; particularly in areas that experience frequent pipe bursts and sewer overflows.

‘It’s exciting to see how the pipe replacement programme has kicked off and gained significant momentum in the first quarter of the financial year. Currently, 25% of targeted water pipes and 28% of sewer pipes have already been replaced.

‘This year we aim to replace up to 50 000 meters of water pipes and 100 000 meters of sewer pipes as part of a planned approach, especially in areas where our network infrastructure is under severe pressure, due to several factors such as age and rapid densification,’ said Councillor Zahid Badroodien, Mayoral Committee Member for Water and Sanitation.

The City regrets any inconvenience caused as a result of the necessary maintenance under way. The work is necessary to improve overall water and sanitation service delivery in our developing city.
